How the calculator works

Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

  1. Profit. We add up what the apps paid you, then take off one of three things: the HMRC mileage rate plus your other work costs, your actual costs, or the £1,000 trading allowance. You can only use one, so we show all three and use the biggest unless you tell us you're already using a method (which is better?).
  2. Mileage rate. Cars and vans: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in 2026/27 (45p in 2025/26), then 25p. Motorbikes: 24p a mile. The rate replaces fuel, insurance and repairs, so those aren't claimed again.
  3. Income Tax. Your profit is added to any pay from a job, and we work out the extra tax that causes, using the bands for England and Northern Ireland, Wales or Scotland. The tax-free Personal Allowance shrinks above £100,000.
  4. National Insurance. Class 4 is 6% of profit between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. Class 2 no longer has to be paid; it's treated as paid once profit reaches the Small Profits Threshold.
  5. Take-home and hourly rate. We take your real cash costs (fuel at your MPG and price, plus the work share of insurance and repairs) and the tax off your earnings, then divide by your hours.
